Filling of Wrinkles using Hyaluronic Acid injection

Hyaluronic acid fillers are injected into the skin using syringes equipped with very fine needles: hyaluronic acid injections are carried out on an outpatient basis and the discomfort felt during the treatment is completely bearable.

Although almost immediate, the rejuvenating effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are not permanent, so much so that after a relatively short period (varying from 4 months to 2 years), wrinkles begin to appear again and the lips (or cheekbones) gradually lose their volume. The gradual reabsorption of the filler by the skin makes it necessary to periodically repeat hyaluronic acid injections after the effect has disappeared.

Hyaluronic acid

A look back to understand: what is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a component of the so-called basic substance of the dermis: it is a glycosaminoglycan, that is to say a molecule formed of long unbranched chains of disaccharide units (alternation of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine). By binding to a large number of water molecules, hyaluronic acid provides hydration, elasticity and softness to tissues while protecting them from excessive stress. The concentration of hyaluronic acid in the connective tissue of the skin gradually decreases with age: for this reason, mature skin appears less elastic and less hydrated than young skin. Although it is a completely physiological and natural phenomenon, many women wish to counter the inexorable advance of age and thus prevent wrinkles and other skin imperfections. The goal is to look younger… and nothing better than hyaluronic acid filler to satisfy this wish.

Indications for filler

The hyaluronic acid-based filler is the ideal solution to correct (and improve) small imperfections in the facial skin, generated by this process of irreversible evolution which worries and distresses so many women and men.

Hyaluronic acid filler is indicated in the following circumstances:

  1. Reshape expression lines
  2. Crow's feet
  3. Glabellar lines (which originate in the forehead, precisely in the part immediately above the nose)
  4. Filling of small scar lesions (for example, scars left by acne)
  5. Plump up thin lips lacking volume
  6. Volumization of sagging cheekbones
  7. Reshape facial profile and jaw line
  8. Correction of post-traumatic/surgical scars

In addition to being injected into the face, hyaluronic acid filler can also be used to fill other areas of the body: for this purpose, injections of this prodigious substance are carried out to improve the appearance and give volume to the calves, breasts and buttocks.

Disadvantages

Over the years, hyaluronic acid has earned the title of leader among all dermal fillers. Indeed, the anti-aging effect promoted by injections of this substance is astonishing: it volumizes, softens, hydrates and – above all – rejuvenates skin aged by stress, tobacco, UV rays and age.

Despite these positive aspects, hyaluronic acid fillers can cause some side effects during injection: first of all, immediately after the injection, the skin tends to react, giving rise to hematomas, bruises or edema which are generally light and short-lived.

Unlike collagen injections, hyaluronic acid fillers do not generate allergic reactions: for this reason, it is not necessary to carry out a preliminary intradermal test to assess a possible allergy.

Contraindications

Although serious side effects of hyaluronic acid injections are uncommon, it is strongly advised against administering this filler during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Additionally, hyaluronic acid fillers are contraindicated in the presence of skin diseases, ongoing herpes infection, autoimmune skin diseases, and collagenopathies.

Effect and duration
The filling effect provided by filler hyaluronic acid injections depends on:

  • Skin type
  • Hyaluronic acid concentration
  • Type of product injected (viscosity, cohesiveness, fluidity of the product, etc.)

Hyaluronic acid is an absorbable filler, meaning it is completely metabolized by the skin over a variable period of time, generally not exceeding 24 months.

Area to be treated

The wide availability on the market of fillers formulated with hyaluronic acid at different concentrations has made it possible to intervene on many fronts and satisfy multiple aesthetic demands, ranging from the correction of small expression lines to the volumetric increase of the lips, cheekbones, buttocks, and breasts, but also the correction of the nose by non-surgical rhinoplasty.

Strengthen the anti-wrinkle effect

It is possible to prolong and strengthen the anti-aging effect by regularly applying specific anti-wrinkle products enriched with cosmetic substances with moisturizing and emollient action – such as Allantoin, Panthenol and unsaturated eudermal lipids – and with antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, lipoic acid and vitamin A palmitate.
In addition, to support the hyaluronic acid filler, it is recommended to take orally certain supplements with antioxidant and anti-aging action. To this end, substances such as vitamins C and E, echinacea, resveratrol, collagen, hyaluronic acid and lipoic acid help to keep the skin supple, firm and hydrated for longer, effectively combating the signs of aging.
